Unconventional hackathons for different event needs

Once the sole domain of tech companies and startups, the hackathon has invaded almost every industry. Event planners organise hackathons for different objectives, ranging from recruitment and networking to marketing and education.

The hackathon is an event, usually a competition, for techies that span 2 full days in which software developers, hardware developers, designers and project managers collaborate intensely to develop an innovative project. However, many companies are adapting this format and organising more unconventional hackathons for their own purposes.

1) Non-competitive hackathons

Some hackathon organisers are removing the competitive element to create a more collaborative element while possibly saving money on prizes. It creates a more friendly environment for less experienced participants to join in and learn from more experienced ones. People are more willing to take the time to teach because they are not too preoccupied with winning. In addition, ideas are much more creative as there are tie-ups and cooperation between teams and this leads to more breakthroughs.

However, the drawback is that people tend to work slower and are sometimes less motivated to push themselves to the ultimate limit. Yet, the presentations at the fintech hackathon Hack/Make the Bank 2015 organised at Level 39 still had high quality pitches.

2) Very short hackathons

For the event planners that cannot find a venue for a 2-day hackathon or lack the logistical resources to do so, a short hackathon could just do the trick.

PA Consulting, based in London recently organised a one-hour hackathon. It mainly focused on developing an idea and creating a quick prototype. It served as a great networking session for busy professionals and was awesome for employer branding as people could understand what the company did on a deeper level and forge stronger relationships by working together.

3) Non-technical hackathons

The most common non-technical hackathon are business hackathons that mainly focus on the ideation, business building processes and the pitch. Code-free hackathons like Protohack are great for generating less technical solutions, while not excluding them entirely. Prototypes however, tend to be less advanced as it’s difficult to build any actual programmes or products without coding experience.

4) Virtual hackathons

Working over the Internet on sharing platforms can also get the job done. The best thing about virtual hackathons is the ability to draw participants from all over the world. However, it is difficult to sustain successful teams as there is too little face-to-face contact and time zone issues.

 

What all the hackathons have in common is the culture of encouraging innovation, building and breaking things and teamwork. As long as these values are promulgated, the hackathon will be successful whatever form it takes,

Planning events as a Growth Hacking Strategy for small businesses

Social media is also a great way to tap on the networks of your event attendees. Prepare relevant social media channels and hashtags and encourage people to use it before, during and after the event! It’s free marketing so why not use it?

2. Small and intimate

As an event planner you don’t need to wrack your head planning a huge and spectacular event to achieve your goal of driving growth. Small and cozy events with a conducive environment for conversations will help your event goers form communities with each other and strengthen their relationship with your business because they get more individual attention from you. Moreover, you can save significantly on costs!

3. Focus on what’s important

Focus on 1-2 things you want your event attendees to get out of your event. Do you want your event goers to experience your services, form connections with each other, or gain some valuable knowledge? What is the main takeaway for your audience?

Like in business, go lean with your event. Do away with unnecessary frills like a buffet dinner, or an entertainer even. But make sure to invest enough time and resources into helping your audience get what they came to get.

4. Partner up

Partnering up can double your market reach while reducing the work for each company. Moreover, your event will look more credible for the attendees. And you can make it event more useful to your event attendees by exposing them to a complementary service or product!

Just make sure to clarify expectations with partner businesses and communicate consistently before the event so that all partners are on the same page.

5. Incorporate branding

Tie back the event to your company. Have a definite plan about how you can generate sales from the event. Ensure the personality of your company comes through in the event. And make sure you brand, brand, brand! Your presentation slides, event venue, freebies and even the content of your event should show your company’s logo and link back to your overall brand.

Make your event useful, fun and enjoyable. A positive and comfortable (relaxed) experience is more likely to leave a long-lasting sense of joy in your event attendees’ lives and they will attribute this to you!

But the industry ought to take a step back and make sense of this flurry of activity! It is crucial to. If not, we will find ourselves going in circles, experience crippling inefficiencies and miss out on opportunities. Collaboration and exchange of ideas is key to helping the industry make sense of the chaos. In doing so, we can

At present, the Singapore events sector is full of ideas and energy, but events for the events people to harness this dynamism and potential for collaboration is still lacking. Events people are too busy looking outwards, that there’s little time to slow down and look inwards. Even as networking events in other sectors increase, as seen from the numerous meetup groups, facebook groups, and events on our own events page for startups, engineers, marketers and so on, networking events for events people throughout the industry are minimal.

We need a recognisable Singapore events community.

Singapore’s ins and outs can be showcased to the world only when event planners uncover her hidden gems. More networking amongst events people in Singapore will allow events planners to uncover new services, new venues and new ideas. If we want to achieve the vision of giving visitors authentic local experiences (MICE2020), we need to collaborate more.
