Crowdfunding: Q&A with HongSin Kwek, CEO and Founder of Phoenixict

Ever heard of Indiegogo, Kickstarter or Crowdfunder? What about the term crowdfunding?

Crowdfunding only surfaced a few years ago but it is fast becoming a go-to method for raising funds. How it works: You pitch your idea on a crowdfunding platform like one of the mentioned sites, and if people like your idea, they can contribute to your project. You can pitch almost anything – products, applications, song albums and even babies! Yes, you heard that right – babies. But that’s another story (See here: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/help-the-haleys-have-a-baby).

While it is now well integrated in the US, the same cannot be said for Asia. However, thanks to Crowdfunding Asia, spearheaded by HongSin Kwek, the Founder of startup PhoenixICT, Asia will have its second Crowdfunding summit in November this year.

We speak to her to get to know more about the second summit, and also the debut LIVE Crowdfunding Asia Festival – BOLD 2015, an extension of the event inspired an co-organised with youths aged 18 to 24 years young from various Institutes of Higher Learning (IHLs) in Singapore.

Q1: What is Crowdfunding Asia about?

KHS: It is a platform to network and collaborate with others as well as to showcase your ideas and products. At the summit, attendees will have opportunities to mingle, discuss and pitch projects that may help them gain insights to current concepts and find investors who are interested in backing their models. It is also an avenue for us to provide alternatives to fill in the gaps that the traditional approach leaves. An example of such a gap is how the funding available to technopreneurs is common but not to mumpreneurs, hawkerpreneurs, hydropreneurs, and more.

Find out more at: http://www.cfasia.org/en/aboutus/

Q2: What is the difference between the Crowdfunding Asia – Singapore Summit 2015 and the Crowdfunding Asia Festival – BOLD 2015?

eventnook Crowdfunding Asia Festival Singapore Summit Phoenixict BOLD 2015
Photo: HongSin Kwek

KHS: The Crowdfunding Asia Summit is a full day conference focused on interaction with international experts and practitioners in the crowdfunding scene. Regulators, government, investors, bankers, media, startups, entrepreneurs of all walks of industry will be there. The extension of the summit is the Crowdfunding Asia festival BOLD 2015, which spans 3.5-days and will provide the platform to challenge all startups, entrepreneurs who are brave enough to show their business in the open field and to call for LIVE CROWDFUNDING. Whether it is media, tech, water, investors, bankers, research, health, welfare or socio-enterprises – as long as they are out to demonstrate their potential. We are expecting few thousands of visitors flocking in with comfortable attires (since it is outdoors) to exchange ideas, hear pitches and learn from each other to better their business models and more. It is a marketplace to be and YOU WANT TO BE IN IT TO MAKE HISTORY!

Q3: How is it beneficial?

KHS:

It is beneficial when you start giving yourself a chance to be a part of it.

It is beneficial when you participate.

It is beneficial when you help some and someone in turn support you in many other ways.

IT IS A CROWD CONVERSATION…

Q4: Who should attend? (the Crowdfunding Asia Summit 2015 and/or the Crowdfunding Asia Festival BOLD 2015?)

KHS: EVERYONE who is in pursuit of turning their dream into reality. EVERYONE who believes they can contribute… EVERYONE who wants Singapore to hear them…. EVERYONE who sees crowdfunding as a strong alternative to their vision, or to help someone live their dreams in business and more.

Create your very own Organizer’s Profile on EventNook!

eventnook organiser profile pageHow do you reach out to your previous event-goers for your current events? There are people who go for, maybe one or two of your events but do not particularly follow or keep track of upcoming ones. Besides Facebook and other social media platforms, what is another way to keep people informed?

Rejoice, for EventNook’s new feature, the Organizer’s Profile is the one-stop avenue for all your events! Now your attendees have access to everything under a single page. While social media platforms work well, ours is designed exclusively to showcase all the events you have organised in a listed calendar format.

Page viewers can toggle between past and upcoming events to check out what you have organized in the past and also in the near future. The list requires no extra effort – it is automatically shown according to the “My Events” page you see in your own account. You can spare yourself the hassle of listing everything and let EventNook do it for you.

eventnook organiser profile pageBesides that, you can input general information of you or your organization, such as name, logo, tagline, description and website. The information display is great for increasing brand awareness or brand recognition as well. With this, attendees can clearly see who the organizer is.

Add a banner image to create a page with your own look and feel. Perhaps something colourful for a vibrant and dynamic company? Or a picture with blue and grey hues to denote professionalism and productivity? You choose.

Our widget also allows you to present both your events and Facebook page simultaneously, which could serve as an additional platform to lead your attendees to your social media page. Who says you can’t have the best of both worlds?

The most wonderful thing about the new Organizer’s Profile, though, is that creating it is so simple. EventNook has made the process of creating a profile page easy by putting everything together in a single form. Try it out for yourself by following this guide:

1. Look for the Organizer’s Profile page.

First, log in to your account.

Planning events as a Growth Hacking Strategy for small businesses

Building customer relations that run deeper than the superficial newsletter greetings are getting more difficult today. The average consumer today is distracted, spoilt for choice and very busy. To effectively get a customer to return to your business again and again requires additional effort.

Events can help you cut through the noise online and offline. Through live events, you can attract potential customers and cultivate long-term relationships with existing customers. People continue to be attracted to actual human connection. And with online ticketing and registration solutions readily available online, event-goers can attend events more conveniently. Events offer businesses a great growth hacking strategy to achieve a stronger customer base and greater brand connection.

1. Use existing networks

You don’t have to do everything yourself. The best part about planning events is that you have a real reason to call up that emcee you met at a networking session last time, or that catering company your cousin runs.

And if you plan an event that really excites your target audience, they might actually help you plan and market it! Leverage on their networks and enthusiasm. For instance, Airbnb supports their users in planning meetups for people in certain locales, enabling them to have events in their name all around the world.

And as your event gains traction, you can start engaging your event attendees to be part of your event in different ways. For EventNook, our networking events brought together events people from all parts of the event industry and soon, we found an emcee, venue sponsors and event photography services for our subsequent events who would be willing to use our events as a platform to showcase their services.

Social media is also a great way to tap on the networks of your event attendees. Prepare relevant social media channels and hashtags and encourage people to use it before, during and after the event! It’s free marketing so why not use it?

2. Small and intimate

As an event planner you don’t need to wrack your head planning a huge and spectacular event to achieve your goal of driving growth. Small and cozy events with a conducive environment for conversations will help your event goers form communities with each other and strengthen their relationship with your business because they get more individual attention from you. Moreover, you can save significantly on costs!

3. Focus on what’s important

Focus on 1-2 things you want your event attendees to get out of your event. Do you want your event goers to experience your services, form connections with each other, or gain some valuable knowledge? What is the main takeaway for your audience?

Like in business, go lean with your event. Do away with unnecessary frills like a buffet dinner, or an entertainer even. But make sure to invest enough time and resources into helping your audience get what they came to get.

4. Partner up

Partnering up can double your market reach while reducing the work for each company. Moreover, your event will look more credible for the attendees. And you can make it event more useful to your event attendees by exposing them to a complementary service or product!

Just make sure to clarify expectations with partner businesses and communicate consistently before the event so that all partners are on the same page.

Chill Out with Event Professionals: EventNook partners with Venuerific (a venue portal) and LiveLife (an event planning platform)

5. Incorporate branding

Tie back the event to your company. Have a definite plan about how you can generate sales from the event. Ensure the personality of your company comes through in the event. And make sure you brand, brand, brand! Your presentation slides, event venue, freebies and even the content of your event should show your company’s logo and link back to your overall brand.

If you want soft and kissable lips try this amazing homemade gloss and you will never want to buy tour lip gloss again! Enjoy!

For instance, consider giving away food vouchers as lucky draw prizes at the event if you are running a restaurant so that event attendees are encouraged to return. Or, giving away samples of your company’s product that may require customers to buy complementary products or return for re-fills can help increase customer retention.

6. Have fun!

Make your event useful, fun and enjoyable. A positive and comfortable (relaxed) experience is more likely to leave a long-lasting sense of joy in your event attendees’ lives and they will attribute this to you!

Events make people feel appreciated. By planning an event for the benefit of your customer segments, you show that your business genuinely cares. It can be incorporated into your growth hacking strategy. At the same time, by getting to know the people in the company, your business is humanised, and trust tends to strengthen. Even if you are on a tight budget, there is always a way to plan a killer event to drive business growth!

6 event website design hacks from the best EventNook websites

1) Singapore Yacht Show 2014

Screen shot 2015-09-06 at PM 04.05.34

One unique thing this event website does is in using the cover photo space at the top to emphasise event details like date and venue. Putting it right at the top as a nice visual allows the organisers to draw greater attention to event details and help their attendees remember the event, or at least find the details more conveniently.

A small but very powerful design element is adding a very thin strip of red at the top of the page. It gives greater coherence to the entire page by aligning the colour scheme to its logo’s colour scheme.

The page also uses the pages function to remove clutter from its main page. By moving important but lengthy information such as FAQs and Terms & Conditions to a different page, the main page can be clean and straight to the point.

The Singapore Yacht Show 2014 event page is all about decluttering and making event information clear and pleasing to the eye.

2) Chill Out with #eventprofs 2015

Designed by EventNook staff themselves, Chill Out’s event website maximises the functions of the EventNook registration and ticketing platform while looking good.

Despite tons of information, the designers managed to balance visuals and words. EventNook’s platform offers flexibility to the event organisers in designing a cover picture at the top as well as change the background.

Screen shot 2015-09-06 at PM 04.54.56

The event organisers chose to place the ticketing information on the main page. This is a great feature for event organisers who want to make buying tickets easy and effortless for event attendees.

Screen shot 2015-09-06 at PM 04.54.40

The event organisers have also created various ticket types such as an early bird discount and a group discount ticket that encourages event attendees to bring their colleagues and friends along.

It manages to be both professional-looking as well as laid back and fun, totally befitting a professional networking event.

Check out the latest Chill Out event here!

3) Creatory Vol. 1 2014

We just can’t get enough of the mosaic design in the background and how the fonts and colours all align in pastel heaven. You can be extremely creative with your event design on EventNook’s platform without necessarily knowing how to code!

Screen shot 2015-09-06 at PM 04.04.15

4) Continental Amazing Race

If you don’t have much time to design a whole new EventNook website page, you can easily upload a pre-designed poster and still have a great-looking page!

Screen shot 2015-09-06 at PM 04.28.12

What EventNook does great is to allow you to add on any kind of information for your event participants that a poster or email newsletter cannot! To help event participants choose the correct T-shirt design, the event organisers included a handy page here.

Screen shot 2015-09-06 at PM 04.27.17

5) Santacon 2013

Santacon is a series of different events spread across 3 days and the event organisers have effectively used EventNook’s functions to highlight information for each day, without cluttering the main page.

We love their humorous design, featuring many Santas hanging on a line, to form a great design border for the poster.

Screen shot 2015-09-06 at PM 04.26.16

While Santacon has a great poster design, rather than just re-uploading their poster, they made sure to fully utilise EventNook’s online event page by choosing a great pastel green background and also including a smaller banner with all the most essential details under Organizer’s Contact Info!

Screen shot 2015-09-06 at PM 04.26.01

6) Vi.bran.se: An Interactive Exhibition of Local Social Enterprises

Vi.bran.se makes use of the multimedia nature of EventNook’s platform with a video. Having multiple forms of content helps the event organisers increase frequency and intensity of attendee engagement.

To add videos, simply click the “insert video” icon and paste the url:

Screen shot 2015-09-07 at PM 01.13.35

The use of bright colours in the background and foreground, the interesting fonts as well as the video creates a vibrant page indeed!
